1899, 1906, and 1907 St. Louis Major League Program Collection (3)
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,293
Collection of three early turn-of-the-century Major League programs issued for games involving either the St. Louis Cardinals or St. Louis Browns. Both St. Louis clubs obviously took great pride in their programs as each of these are extremely substantial multipage scorebooks (sixteen, twenty, and twenty-four pages, respectively). These are extreme rarities (each is the only example we have ever offered), and the 1899 program is especially noteworthy as so few Major League programs have survived from the very late 1890s. 1) 1899 St. Louis (vs. Pittsburgh) National League program (year determined by the names on the preprinted scorecard). The preprinted lineups include Williams, McCarthy, and Reitz for Pittsburgh, and Burkett, Wallace, and Powell for St. Louis. Neatly scored in pencil. The scorecard records all of the action with the exception of the ninth inning for St. Louis and shows five runs for each team. Research indicates that the only game in which Pittsburgh scored five runs against St. Louis on the road in 1899 was on April 21st, in a 6-5 loss. The sixteen-page program (5 x 6.75 inches) has a very light vertical center fold (barely detectable) and is in Excellent condition. 2) 1906 St. Louis (vs. Brooklyn) National League program (year preprinted on the cover). The preprinted lineups include McCarthy, Lumley, and Casey for Brooklyn, and Bennett, Smoot, and Grady for St. Louis. Neatly scored in pencil. (The game went into extra innings and it is not clear what the final score was, thus the exact date of the game cannot be determined.) The twenty-page program (5.25 x 7.75 inches) is in Excellent to Mint condition. 3) 1907 St. Louis (vs. Washington) American League program (year preprinted on the cover). The preprinted lineups include Ganley, Cross, and Anderson for Washington, and Wallace, Niles, and Pickering for St. Louis. Neatly scored in pencil; recording a 2-0 Washington win. Research indicates that the only St. Louis Browns 2-0 home loss to Washington in 1907 occurred on May 12th. The twenty-four page program (5.25 x 6.75 inches) has a few very minor edge tears and is in Very Good to Excellent condition. Total: 3 programs. Reserve $400. Estimate $800+.
