1912 Boston Red Sox Pennant
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $4,113
Rare Boston Red Sox pennant issued during the club's memorable 1912 World Championship season. The small red-and-white felt pennant, which features a raised-relief design created by the application of red-felt letters to the central white strip, reads "Red Sox - 1912." A "red sock" on either end of the pennant completes the attractive motif. 1912 marked the first of four World Championships won by the Red Sox during the decade, with the other victories coming in 1915, 1916,and 1918. The 1912 club was led by the incomparable "Smokey Joe" Wood, who won a league-leading thirty-four games, and the outfield triumvirate of Tris Speaker, Harry Hooper, and Duffy Lewis. In what was one of the most exciting World Series ever played, Boston defeated the New York Giants in eight games (one game ended in a tie) to capture their first World Championship since 1903. This is one of only two 1912 Boston Red Sox pennants of this style we have ever seen. Not surprisingly, this pennant, along with the 1918 Boston Red Sox pennant in this auction, was discovered many years ago in the heart of "Red Sox Nation" by a New Hampshire collector and is new to the organized hobby. The pennant (16 inches in length) is in outstanding condition given its age, with all of the colors still bright and vibrant. Both of the side tassels remain completely intact and there is a very tiny and extremely light area of discoloration above the "S" in "Sox." Unlike most pennants, this example displays no tack holes or edge tears. In Excellent to Mint condition overall. This is an exceptional and rarely seen relic, ideal for display as intended, commemorating the start of Boston's 1912-1918 dynasty. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $4,113
