Original Charles Conlon Photo Collection PSA/DNA (25)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,406

Outstanding collection of twenty-five original Charles Conlon baseball photos, each dating from circa 1915. Ideally, each of the photographs has been authenticated by PSA/DNA and is accompanied by an individual COA designating the photo as "Type 1 - 1st Generation." All of the photos feature one player, with eighteen picturing the player "in action" (i.e., warming up on the sidelines, during batting practice, etc.). While there are no Hall of Famers included in this grouping, many "name" players are pictured here. All of the photos feature Conlon's Evening Telegram proprietary stamp on the reverse with the exception of one (his name is written in pencil instead). On a few of the photos, Conlon's stamp has been crossed out and a The Ring proprietary stamp appears above it (possibly indicating that Conlon sold the photo rights to The Ring.) Most of the photos feature the player's name on the reverse, as well as a few additional editorial notations, a number of which are in Conlon's hand. Unless otherwise noted, all of the photos measure 8 x 10 inches. For listing purposes, we have grouped the players by team affiliation. New York Yankees (8): Ray Keating, Duffy Lewis (7.25 x 9.75 inches), Nick Cullop, Del Pratt, Herb Thormahlen, Walt Alexander, Leslie Nunamaker, and Marty McHale. Boston Red Sox (7): Bill Lamar (7x 9.5 inches), Wally Schang, Amos Strunk, Stuffy McInnis (7 x 9.5 inches), Carl Mays (the notation "Mays P. Bos. A. 1918" is written on the front in black fountain pen), Jimmy Cooney, and Braggo Roth (6.5 x 8.5 inches). Brooklyn Robins (7): Bill Dahlen (4 x 5 inches), Nap Rucker, Ivy Olson (7 x 9.5 inches), Bill Lamar, John Mails (7.5 x 9.5 inches), Hap Myers, and George Cutshaw. Washington Senators (2): Val Picinich and John Lavan. Cincinnati Reds (1): Tommy Griffith. The vast majority of photos display very minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including corner chips, minor edge tears, creases, and light surface wrinkles. This is a very substantial collection of original photos by Charles Conlon, the legendary master of baseball photography. In Very Good (or better) condition overall, with the exception of Rucker and Lewis (both Good). Total: 25 photos. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,406
