Circa 1916 Boston Red Sox Pennant
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,058
Rare Boston Red Sox World Championship pennant dating from the team's 1912 to 1918 dynasty. The attractive design of this oversized red felt pennant displays the team name, "Red Sox," in large white "shadow box" letters alongside a circular illustration featuring a crossed bats, ball, and bases motif that reads "Boston Red Sox Base Ball Club - Worlds Champions." The absence of a year on this piece has always led to some ambiguity regarding its date of issue; the Vintage Pennant Price Guide (by Mike Egner, published 2009; highly recommended!) attributes it to 1918, the year of Boston's fourth and final World Championship of the decade, although we think a strong case can be made that it actually dates from 1916. All Boston Red Sox pennants dating from the period 1912 through 1918 are extremely rare and we have seen only a few other examples of this particular style. Not surprisingly, this pennant, along with the 1912 Boston Red Sox pennant in this auction, was discovered many years ago in the heart of "Red Sox Nation" by a New Hampshire collector and is new to the organized hobby. The pennant (34 inches in length) displays three tack holes (tip and each corner) as well as two small edge tears along the top that have resulted in minor fabric loss. Both of the original corner tassels remain intact. In Excellent condition overall. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,058
