Circa 1955 Mickey Mantle Haggar Slacks Standup Advertising Store Display

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $3,819

Bright and colorful cardboard counter display, with easel back, featuring Mickey Mantle in promotion of Haggar Slacks. This extremely rare 1950s Mickey Mantle advertising piece is the first example we have ever seen. It is a great store display classic, clearly from another era, defined by its style, design, and character as epitomizing 1950s advertising kitsch. This is not just another Mickey Mantle advertising display. This is an extraordinary example of pure 1950s Americana! Today, athletes know they've "made it" when they are featured in Super Bowl commercials or billboard advertising campaigns. When this sign was displayed in the early or mid 1950s, it was a simpler time. A sign such as this, prominently displayed in a clothes store, was "the big time." That's part of the charm of this store display, and why it brings a smile to face of students of popular culture and Mickey Mantle fans alike. This is also a very well made, extremely early, and possibly only-surviving example of this ideal-for-display Mantle advertising piece. The colorful illustration pictures Mantle casually dressed, wearing a pair of Haggar Slacks, while another pair of slacks is draped over his arm. A generic baseball figure, pictured against the backdrop of a large baseball, appears in the upper right. Both Mantle's name and his team affiliation ("New York Yankees") are printed in the lower right. The printed advertising text along the base promotes the fact that you can "'Double your wardrobe' with Haggar Slacks." The piece (14 x 18.75 inches) displays minor wear to the borders, including a few light surface abrasions, as well as a thin strip of surface paper loss along the left edge; however, the minor flaws are of little or no consequence and the sign displays beautifully as Excellent. The original easel back is completely intact, allowing the piece to be displayed upright as intended. This is one of our favorite early Mantle advertising display pieces. It has tremendous character! Reserve $400. Estimate (open).
