Circa 1950 Pro-Model Baseball Cap Collection (5)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,233
Collection of five pro-model caps, each dating from either the 1940s or 1950s, one of which can be positively attributed to second baseman Roy Hartsfield. 1) Circa 1940-1945 St. Louis Browns. The white felt cap features six orange-and-brown stripes and a brown brim. A "Sisler Hummel" manufacturer's stamp appears on the leather headband. Situated behind the headband is a "6 7/8" size tag. The cap displays heavy wear, including light staining on the back of the cap, cracking to the leather headband, and light soiling on the underside of the brim. 2) Circa 1949-1950 Chicago White Sox. The black felt cap displays a white embroidered "C" on the front and a "McGregor Goldsmith" label on the headband. (There is a longer stitch outline under the MacGregor label, indicating that another label was removed from the cap.) The size "7 1/4," is written in blue ink on the white leather headband. What appears to be the number "2" is written in black marker on the underside of the brim. The number "2" was worn by both infielder Bobby Rhawn and outfielder Johnny Ostrowski in 1949, and by Ostrowski, infielder Al Kozar, and outfielder Mike McCormick in 1950. The cap displays moderate-to-heavy wear, including a few tears to the headband. 3) Circa 1950 Brooklyn Dodgers cap. The royal-blue felt cap features a white embroidered "B" on the front. A "Tim McAuliffe" label appears on the headband, as does the stamped size "6 5/8." The cap displays little-to-light wear. 4) 1950-1952 Boston Braves. The blue felt cap features a white "B" on the front and a red brim. A "Horace Partridge" label appears on the headband. This cap can be positively attributed to second baseman Roy Hartsfield, as both his name and the cap size ("Hartsfield 6 7/8") are chain-stitched in red on the headband. Hartsfield only played with the Braves between the years 1950 and 1952. The cap displays moderate wear. 5)1952 Cleveland Indians. The black felt cap displays the team's logo of a smiling Indian within the letter "C" on the front. A "Wilson" label appears on the head band and a "7 1/4" size tag is located behind the headband. The hat size is also stamped on both the front and reverse of the headband. The cap displays moderate wear, including soiling to the headband. It is rare to find any pro-model caps from this era. This is an outstanding group of rare vintage Major League caps, assembled over many years one at a time, representing the entire small but very high quality cap collection of an very advanced old-time collector. Total: 5 caps. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,233
