1960-1964 Willie McCovey Pro-Model Bat - Extremely Rare Early Model
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,231
Rare Willie McCovey H&B block-letter model "K44" bat dating from the 1960-1964 manufacturing period. The extreme rarity of this bat is emphasized by the fact that of the twenty-three Willie McCovey pro-model bats currently listed in the MEARS census, this is the only example dating from the 1960-1964 manufacturing period, and MEARS has never graded an earlier example. The bat displays moderate use including ball marks, rack marks, and cleat marks. McCovey began his Major League career in 1959 with the Giants and even though he only appeared in fifty-two games in that year, his 13 home runs, 38 RBI, and .354 average earned him the Rookie of the Year Award. Over the course of the next twenty-one seasons McCovey was one of the game's greatest sluggers and his lifetime total of 521 home runs ties him for eighteenth on the all-time list with Ted Williams and Frank Thomas. Included among his many individual achievements are three home-run titles (1963, 1968, and 1969) and one MVP Award (1969). He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1986. This is an extraordinary McCovey bat dating from the earliest days of his Major League career. Length: 34.5 inches. Weight: 32.9 ounces. Graded A7 by MEARS (base grade of 5, plus 2 points for use). LOA from Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,231
