1911 Christy Mathewson Photo
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $705
Original vintage press photo, culled from The Detroit News archives, capturing Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson as a member of the New York Giants in 1911. Mathewson is pictured in a bust-length pose wearing his home white uniform. Reverse markings include an "International News Service" credit stamp (type used by the syndicate between the years 1909 and 1915), a date stamp reading "Filed Before June 1919," and an affixed paper news caption reading Christy Mathewson, the pitching mainstay of the New York Giants. Mathewson did not round into form until late in the season this year and is now in splendid shape for the coming World's series. Despite the lack of a precise year stamp on the reverse, this photo can be conclusively dated to the 1911 season based upon the uniform style shown. 1911 was the only year in which the Giants wore a pinstripe uniform in combination with a solid-color hat bearing a white "NY" on the front (according to the Baseball Hall of Fame uniform database). Mathewson won twenty-six games in 1911, but was victimized by a lack of run support in the World Series against the Athletics. Despite recording a stellar 2.00 ERA, Matty lost two of the three games he started in the Series as the Athletics defeated the Giants in six games to capture their second consecutive World Championship. The photo (6.375 x 8.375 inches) has a couple of corner chips (in the upper and lower right corners) that is not uncommon with working press photos. Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $705
