Circa 1912 Philadelphia Athletics Team Photo
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $940
Vintage original press photo, culled from The Detroit News archives, capturing the circa 1912 Philadelphia Athletics in a traditional team pose. Thirty team members are pictured in their home white uniforms (some are also wearing team sweaters) posing together in front of the grandstand (possibly during spring training), including Eddie Plank, Chief Bender, and Eddie Collins. Reverse markings include an "International News Service" credit stamp (type used by the syndicate between the years 1912 and 1915), a date stamp reading "Filed Before June 1919," and the handwritten editorial notation "Baseball - American League - Phil." Despite the lack of a precise year stamp on the reverse, this photo can be more narrowly dated to either the 1912 or 1913 season based upon the type of International News Service stamp used (1912-1915) and uniform style shown. The uniform is a solid white flannel, with an "A" on the left breast. According to the Baseball Hall of Fame uniform database, during the period 1912 through 1915 that style jersey was only worn by the A's in 1912 and 1913. In 1914 the club switched to a pinstripe home jersey. The photo (8.5 x 6.25 inches), which displays remarkable clarity, has a few very minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including a couple of light surface wrinkles and a tiny chip in the upper right corner. Excellent condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $940
