1909 T204 Ramly Tobacco Collection Including Walter Johnson (23)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,288

Collection of twenty-three different T204 Ramlys highlighted by Hall of Famers Walter Johnson, Mordecai Brown, Eddie Collins, Johnny Evers, and Clark Griffith. Also included is one rare T.T.T. advertisement back. This substantial original-owner collection is an unusual group with reference to condition: The fronts of the cards range in grade from Poor to Very Good (averaging Gd-Vg overall) and include four slightly trimmed, but all have heavy back damage in the form of glue residue and/or minor paper loss, from long ago being removed from an album. The collection is comprised of the following: Arrelanes, Beebe, Blankenship, Bowerman, Brown (HOF), Byrnes, Collins (HOF), Conroy, Evers (HOF), Ewing, Ferguson, Griffith (HOF), Hartzell, Howell, Hummell, Johnson (HOF, slightly trimmed), Jones, Knight, Konetchey, Manning, McAleer (rare T.T.T. advertisement on back), Murnane (Note: Murnane's name is misspelled as "Murname" on this card), and Smith. One of the most elegantly designed card issues ever produced, T204 Ramlys are noted for the distinctive fancy gold-embossed borders that surround the oval photographic portraits. They are much rarer than most other tobacco-card issues from the 1910 era. The Hall of Famers in T204 Ramly can be very expensive in higher grades (particularly Walter Johnson, the key card in the set). This group represents a rarely seen opportunity to acquire a collection of T204 Ramlys, including key Hall of Famer Walter Johnson, at a far more modest cost than higher-graded examples: a PSA PR-FR 1 example of Johnson lists for $2,250 in the SMR; a PSA NM-MT 8 example of Walter Johnson lists for $97,500. This collection represents 19% of the entire set, and is an ideal foundation for the building of a low-grade T204 set. Total: 23 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $5,288
