Circa 1915 Ty Cobb Photo
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $940
Original vintage press photo, culled from The Detroit News archives, capturing Ty Cobb as a member of the Detroit Tigers, circa 1915. Cobb is pictured leaning against the stadium railing as he flashes an uncharacteristic smile for the camera. Reverse markings consist of an "International" credit stamp (type used by the company from approximately 1915 through 1920), remnants of the original paper news caption, and a hint of black paper residue. Although no date is specified on the reverse, the uniform style depicted here was only worn by the Tigers in 1915 (according to the Baseball Hall of Fame uniform database the uniform worn by Cobb in this photo was one of three styles worn by the club in 1915). Cobb's sly grin might relate to the fact that he was in the midst of another remarkable season in 1915, one that would see him win a record ninth consecutive batting title and set a single-season record (since broken) for stolen bases with 96. Cobb also led the league that year in hits (208), runs (144), and on-base percentage (.486). The photo (9 x 7 inches), an extraordinary Cobb study which displays flawless clarity, has a few very minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including slightly uneven borders, and a couple small edge and corner tears. Very Good to Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $940
