Christy Mathewson and Hugh Jennings Photo Collection (3)
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,058
Each of the three photos in this collection, which have been culled from The Detroit News archives, is very old but is a later-print example, meaning that it is either a photo of a photo, or was made from the original negative a number of years after the photo was taken. This was a common practice by many newspapers at the time, but it must be stressed that these are very high quality vintage photos, dating from either the 1920s or early 1930s. 1) Christy Mathewson. Splendid image capturing Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson as a member of the New York Giants, circa 1903. This appears to be a photo of an original Conlon photo taken of Mathewson at the turn of the century. Based upon the reverse stampings, this photo was printed in the 1930s, after Mathewson's death. Reverse markings include an "Acme Newspictures" credit stamp (type used by the syndicate between the years 1931 and 1939), a date stamp reading "Mar 11 1934," and various handwritten editorial notations, one of which reads "Christy Mathewson former N.Y. Giants B.B. team pitcher." The photo captures Mathewson in a standard pitching pose dressed in his home white uniform at what appears to be the Polo Grounds. This image of Mathewson most likely dates from the early turn of the century based upon the uniform style, which was only worn by the Giants between the years 1902 and 1904 (according to the Baseball Hall of Fame Uniform Database). The photo (6 x 8.5 inches) offers outstanding clarity and has a few very minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including a couple light surface wrinkles, slightly uneven borders, and faint editorial marks on the front. Excellent condition overall. 2) Christy Mathewson. The photo, taken in a formal studio setting, pictures a youthful Mathewson, from the waist up, as he gazes away from the camera. The date stamp "Feb 14 1923" appears on the reverse, as does the number "24" written in pencil. Although the date stamp reads 1923, the portrait was obviously taken much earlier (based upon Mathewson's appearance) and probably dates to circa 1905, a time when Mathewson was widely regarded as the greatest pitcher in the game. The photo (3.75 x 5.5 inches), which displays fine clarity, appears to have been neatly trimmed to its current dimensions and is free of nearly all of the minor flaws associated with working press photos. Excellent to Mint condition. 3) Hughie Jennings. The photo captures Jennings as a member of the Baltimore Orioles, circa 1895. Reverse markings include two date stamps ("Filed Before June 1919" and "Dec 7 1925") and various handwritten editorial notations, one of which reads "In his playing days - Hughie Jennings." The photo (4 x 5.5 inches), which has been remounted upon a thin paper backing, has a number of minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including tack holes in each corner, tiny edge tears, and editorial marks on the front. Very Good condition overall. Total: 3 photos. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $1,058
