Circa 1910 Walter Johnson Photo by Charles Conlon
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,410
Original Charles Conlon press photo, culled from The Chicago Sun Times archives, capturing Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson as a member of the Washington Senators. This is an extraordinary image. The fabled "Big Train" is pictured here warming up on the sidelines prior to a game, displaying the pitching form that made him the bane of American League batters for nearly two decades. Reverse markings include Conlon's "Evening Telegram" credit stamp, two date stamps ("Feb 17 1914" and "May 12 8 21pm '89"), a New York Herald credit stamp ("The N. Y. H. Service"), and editorial notations. Based upon the cap worn by Johnson here, this image most likely dates to either the 1910 or 1911 season (according to the Baseball Hall of Fame Uniform Database). The photo (6.5 x 8.5 inches) has a few very minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including very minor surface wrinkles. This is an outstanding original Conlon photo of the legendary Walter Johnson. In Very Good to Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
