1950s Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra Yoo-Hoo Advertising Sign

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $3,525

Rare large-format advertising store display featuring Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra in promotion of Yoo-Hoo, "The Drink of Champions." This classic advertising display pictures both stars, in full uniform, enjoying a refreshing drink of Yoo-Hoo set against the backdrop of a game in progress. While many people recall Berra's long-standing promotion of the chocolate beverage, the drink was actually invented many years earlier, in the 1920s. It wasn't until Berra became friends with the owner of the company in the 1950s, however, that Yoo-Hoo became a household word. Berra not only recruited a number of investors to help finance a major production facility, but also enlisted the aid of many of his teammates, most important Mickey Mantle, to help promote the beverage. Their efforts were very successful. In a short time Yoo-Hoo became one of the most popular refreshments in America and the chosen drink of every diehard Yankees fan. This is one of the most highly prized of all Yoo-Hoo advertising pieces. As is common for this particular advertising display, the original thin cardboard frame which originally accompanied it has been lost over time. The piece (30.5 x 23 inches) displays an approximate 4 x 2-inch corner chip in the upper right (which is very unobtrusive), as well as a few surface flaws, including abrasions, scratches, border wear, and light water staining (primarily along the right border). While technically in Good condition, most of the condition anomalies (which we believe could easily be rectified if the piece were professionally restored/cleaned) do not significantly detract from its overall visual appeal, and the display presents at a much higher level. Framed to total dimensions of 32.5 x 26 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
