1924 V122 Willard’s Chocolates Near-Complete Set of Non-Baseball Players (49 of 56)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,115

Presented is an exceptional high-grade near-set of forty-nine of the fifty-six cards which comprise this classic multisport prewar issue. Missing just seven cards for completion (#2 Collins, 5 Ruth, 31, 33, 36, 38, and 39 Cobb). The set features champions and stars of the day from a wide variety of sports. (Note: The three baseball players originally accompanied the collection; they have been separated to be offered as their own lot in the auction.) This is an incredible near-complete set, one of the few vintage multisport card sets from the era, and is in remarkable condition for this rare issue. Highlights include many of the greatest names in the history of sport. There are very few contemporary cards of athletes such as Johnny Weismuller, Bill Tilden, and Willie Hoppe. These stars and many others, in a manner similar to the Sport Kings set issued by Goudey Gum in 1933, are featured in this 1920s candy set. We have selected eight cards to be graded by SGC, and one was already graded by SGC when we received the set. SGC Report: #3 Johnston (VG/EX 50), 4 Havers (VG 40), 9 Wainwright (EX 60), 11 Wills (EX 60), 13 Weismuller (VG/EX 50, This is an unusual card which identifies Weismuller under his name as "The Human Fish"), 19 Collett (EX/NM 80), 20 Sarazen (EX+ 70), 27 Tilden (EX/NM 80), and 51 Villa (VG/EX 50). The remaining 40 cards grade as follows: twenty-two cards range from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex), and eighteen cards are Vg condition (including #14 Kahamenoku and 21 Hoppe). This is a very attractive mostly high-grade near-complete set, with many condition highlights, and with even the lesser-graded cards having a far superior eye-appeal than suggested by their technically accurate assigned grades. These forty-nine cards represent an ideal foundation for the assembly of an extraordinary (perhaps the collecting world's finest) complete V122 Willard's Chocolates set. This is a magnificent collection of one of card collecting's most overlooked and substantial multisport issues, and is the finest and most complete collection of V122 Willard's Chocolates we have ever offered. Total 49 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $2,115
