1916 M101-4 Sporting News #87 Joe Jackson - PSA NM 7

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $12,925

Graded NM 7 by PSA. One of only six examples (with the Sporting News ad on back) graded at this level by PSA with just two graded higher. This is an extraordinarily sharp, ultra high-grade example of one of Joe Jackson's most classic cards. It is particularly strong for the grade. This card is in NM-MT condition and has been downgraded to NM only because of a minute area of light toning on the reverse which is of no consequence. This is an incredibly stunning card! Of special note is the fact that The Sporting News advertisement appears on the reverse, which is extremely desirable; while this card was issued with a blank reverse or with one of many different regional advertisements on the reverse, the set has always been referred to as issued by The Sporting News in honor of its most prominent sponsor. Despite playing for thirteen years before his banishment, very few cards of Joe Jackson were issued during his playing days. He was not a regular in 1910 and was, therefore, not included in the tobacco issues of that time. He was banned from baseball following the 1920 season and therefore did not make it into the popular American Caramel and related issues of 1921. Besides a few strip-card issues, there are just not many cards that feature Jackson with his infamous team, the White Sox. The Sporting News and associated sets are by far the most popular of all his White Sox cards as they picture the star in a classic Conlon batting pose. This is, in fact, the same picture that is used for his Cracker Jack card. As noted, and as can easily be seen, this is a particularly outstanding gem. M101-4 cards have a glossy coated surface which is very susceptible to creasing. This card has no creases. The front is bright and perfectly clean. The image is crisp and has flawless contrast. The corners are razor-sharp. The card is centered approximately 40/60 L/R with a very slight natural diamond cut. The advertisement for The Sporting News on the reverse is fresh and bright with bold black print. There are a few very light spots of age toning on the reverse, which are of no consequence. This is a magnificent and very striking example in all respects of one of the most significant and highly prized of all Joe Jackson baseball cards. SMR value is $16,000. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $12,925
