1950 Topps Football Felt Backs Complete Set (100)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,113
Rarely offered complete set of the first major football-card series ever issued by Topps, highlighted by Joe Paterno's rookie card. These unusual cards, honoring college football stars, were issued a year prior to Topps’ Connie Mack All Stars and Current All Stars, as well as the 1951 Topps Red and Blue Back baseball sets. The cards measure 7/8 x 1-7/16 inches with a portrait image set against a colored background (blue, red, green, brown, or yellow), and with the back of each card featuring a felt pennant representing the player’s school. Keys: Creekmur RC (Vg), Davis RC (Ex), Hart/brown (Vg-Ex), Jensen/brown (Vg), Justice (Gd-Vg), Nomellini (HOF, Vg), Paterno RC (Vg-Ex), Royal/brown (Vg-Ex), Stautner (HOF, Ex), Towler/brown (Vg), and Walker/brown (HOF, Vg). The balance of the cards grade as follows: 50% range from Vg-Ex to Ex (with a few slightly better), 40% Vg, and 10% lesser. This is a very significant and scarce early Topps issue, which has always been somewhat overlooked by collectors, perhaps because of their unusual dimensions. Total 100 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $4,113
