1935 R90 Gum, Inc. "Mickey Mouse and the Movie Stars" Complete Set (24)

Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $6,463

The 1935 R90 "Mickey Mouse with the Movie Stars" set is one of the most elusive and highly prized of all 1930s card issues. They are legendary rarities. Sets are virtually impossible to put together! This set was assembled by a very dedicated longtime nonsports collector, one card at a time over a period of many years. Old-time dealers such as Bob Foster contributed to its assembly. Few card sets from any era, sport or nonsport, have the mystique of this set. Most collectors searching for "Mickey Mouse and the Movie Stars" cards are surprised to find that their rarity makes them virtually impossible to collect. Even a sample is tough to find. The offering of a complete set is virtually unheard of. This is only the second set we have ever offered in forty years. The rarity of the series is all the more striking when one considers that this set was issued by Gum, Inc. (as opposed to an obscure manufacturer), and that the series was really a high-number extension to Gum, Inc.'s extremely popular 96-card R89 Mickey Mouse Bubble Gum card set. In fact, the "Mickey Mouse and the Movie Stars" cards are numbered 97 through 120. They are, however, catalogued as a separate entity from the 1-96 low numbers, both because they are so distinctive, with each card featuring Mickey Mouse with a famous star, and because they are so much rarer than those cards in the earlier series. In addition, the "Mickey Mouse and the Movie Stars" series was issued separately by Gum, Inc. In the set, Mickey is featured with all of the greatest real-life stars of the day, including Harpo Marx, Charlie Chaplin, Jimmy Durante, May West, Groucho Marx, Laurel & Hardy, Joe E. Brown, Edward G. Robinson, etc. The set grades as follows: twelve cards range from Vg to Vg-Ex, nine range from Good to Gd-Vg, and three slightly lesser (including one downgraded due to a couple tiny edge tears but with an Ex appearance). All are very attractive cards, even the lowest-graded examples. This is a beautiful set. We have provided images of the entire set online. "Mickey Mouse and the Movie Stars" is one of the premier sets in all of 1930s bubble-gum card collecting. This is an extremely attractive medium-grade complete set of one of nonsport-card collecting's most desirable and legendary rare issues. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $6,463
