1966 Topps "Ugly Buttons" Uncut Proof Sheet
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $353
Rare uncut proof sheet of twelve "Ugly Buttons" originating from the Topps Vault. This piece was originally saved by Topps as an example for its files, but was then later sold by the company shortly after opening the Topps Vault. Ideally, it is accompanied by a COA from the Topps Vault affirming its special provenance. Produced by Topps in 1966 specifically for sale during the Halloween season, the "Ugly Buttons" series features artworks of monsters accompanied by amusing titles. The issued "Ugly Buttons" were tin lithographic pinbacks, measuring two inches in diameter, and were sold individually without gum. Since the complete set is comprised of twenty-four buttons, the offered piece appears to represent half of the original proof sheet (further evidenced by its slightly wavy top border). The twelve buttons featured here are "I'm Super," "Brush After Every Meal," "I'm a Cool Ghoul," "National Blemish Week," "Don't Be Nosey," "Don't Bug Me," "98 Pound Weakling," "Give Me A Great Big Kiss," "Keep Our City Clean," "Here's Looking At You," "You're Just My Type," and "Hold Me." This set is highly regarded by collectors both because of the exceptional quality of the artwork (produced by Wally Wood of Mad magazine fame) and its representation of the 1960s lowbrow cultural monster-art craze. The sheet (18 x 11.5 inches), which is printed on thin stock, displays a number of very light surface wrinkles and is in Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$400.
