1909 E92 Dockman & Sons Near-Complete SGC-Graded Set (37 of 40)
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $9,400
Exceptionally attractive and very rarely seen near-complete set of E92 Dockman & Sons comprised of thirty-seven of the forty cards in the set, all graded by SGC (all submitted for grading by REA). Missing just three cards for completion (Chance, Donovan, and Schaefer). This is the closest to a complete set of E92s that we can recall ever offering. This remarkable group is perhaps the greatest highlight of one of the most substantial original-owner caramel card collection we have ever offered. The entire collection of over 350 1910-era candy cards (plus over 200 tobacco cards) have been consigned to this auction (all appear in the Internet-only section of the auction), and have been saved for decades by the family of the original owner. E92 Dockman & Sons is a very scarce caramel issue from 1909 that shares designs with several other closely related candy issues (Croft's Candy, Nadja Caramels, etc.) from the same era. This near-set is all the more remarkable in that it is an original "childhood" collection that has remained untouched for one-hundred years! The thirty-seven cards in this lot represent what we consider to be the very best condition example of each different E92 card among the total of 139 E92 cards in the entire collection (with the exception of one E92 Wagner, which graded Excellent and is offered individually; the Wagner throwing pose card in the near-set is graded Vg-Ex. The balance of the E92 duplicates from the collection, including four Wagners and five Youngs, are offered as separate lots in this auction.) All thirty-seven cards from the set have been graded and encapsulated by SGC. SGC Condition Report: Fourteen VG/EX 50: Bemis, Sam Crawford (HOF), Devlin, Dougherty, Doyle (throwing), Nap Lajoie (HOF), Magee, John McGraw (HOF), Miller, Schmidt, Honus Wagner/batting (HOF; Very striking card, with bold colors, even corner wear. Clean front and back, with no creases, and centered slightly to the right), Honus Wagner/throwing (HOF; Bright and clean, with vibrant colors, and centered slightly to the left), Cy Young (HOF; Brilliant image set against a bright orange background, light wear on the corners, and very well centered), and Zimmerman. Seventeen VG 40: Chief Bender (HOF), Bergen, Bescher, Bridwell, Casey, Chase, Davis, Doolan, Doyle (bat), Lobert, McLean, Murphy, O'Hara, Schlei, Seigle, Shean, and Joe Tinker (HOF). Five GOOD 30: Gibson, Hughie Jennings (HOF), Kleinow, Christy Mathewson (HOF), and Smith (Schmidt). One POOR 10: Hartsel. This set is in exceptionally fine condition with most cards appearing better than their technically accurate SGC-assigned grades. Caramel cards, because they were issued with candy, one card per package, did not easily escape damage or hold up well to wear over the years. This is a tremendous and very rarely offered near-complete set of E92 Dockmans, one of the most popular, elusive, and colorful of all “E” card issues. Total 37 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++. SOLD FOR $9,400
