1909 E92 Dockman & Sons Collection Including Four Honus Wagners and Six Cy Youngs (98)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $12,925

Collection of ninety-eight assorted (including thirty-one different of the forty cards in the set) E92 Dockman & Sons cards. This is a very impressive mixed-grade collection of these 1909 caramel card classics, with many highlights, and with an extremely high concentration of key Hall of Famers. The ninety-eight cards include a total of twenty-four Hall of Famers, highlighted by four Honus Wagners, six Cy Youngs, and five Nap Lajoies. The condition ranges from Poor to Vg (includes a few Vg-Ex). We have selected seventeen cards to be graded by SGC (submitted by REA). Hall of Famer and SGC Grading Report (24 Hall of Famers): Crawford (SGC FAIR 20), three Jennings (SGC FAIR 20, Pr, and one with three borders trimmed off), five Lajoie (SGC VG 40, two GOOD 30, Gd, Fr), three McGraw (all SGC VG 40), two Tinker (SGC GOOD 30 and Fr), four Wagner (two SGC VG 40 and two FAIR 20), and six Young (SGC VG/EX 50, two VG 40, Fr, Pr, and SGC Authentic). The balance of the cards in this collection (74 cards) grade as follows: sixty cards range in grade from Gd to Vg (with a few Vg-Ex); fourteen are lesser (ranging from Poor to Fr-Gd). These cards are part of one of the most substantial original-owner caramel card collections we have ever offered. The entire collection of over 350 1910-era candy cards (plus over 200 tobacco cards) have been consigned to this auction (all appear in the Internet-only section of the auction), and have been saved for decades by the family of the original owner. E92 Dockman & Sons is a very scarce caramel issue from 1909 that shares designs with several other closely related candy issues (Croft's Candy, Nadja Caramels, etc.) from the same era. The E92 Dockman & Sons set has long been a favorite with early candy card collectors. This collection has an extremely impressive concentration of key Hall of Famers and includes a near-complete set (31 of 40 cards) of these popular classics. Overall relatively consistent and reasonably uniform in grade (as noted, ranging from Poor to Vg, with a few Vg-Ex, but with the vast majority ranging from Good to Very Good), and with many cards having far superior eye-appeal than their technically accurate grades. Total 98 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++. SOLD FOR $12,925
