1940 R145 Gum, Inc. Superman Complete Set: #2 PSA Registry! (7.03 GPA)
Starting Bid - $20,000, Sold For - $32,313
Presented is an extraordinary complete set of 1940 Superman bubblegum cards, literally one of the finest complete sets ever assembled in the history of collecting. This is currently the number-two set on the PSA registry with an astounding GPA of 7.03. This ultra high-grade set has been assembled one card at a time with an uncompromising commitment to condition and eye-appeal by an extremely dedicated collector over many years, who actively sought to upgrade this set at considerable expense during the entire span of his collecting. This is by far the finest set of Superman bubblegum cards, one of nonsport-card collecting's greatest classics, we have ever seen. Advanced collectors are well aware that Superman cards are far more difficult to collect in high-grade than baseball cards of the era, in part because they are far rarer. Gum, Inc.'s 1940 Superman series is one of the most popular nonsport sets ever issued. Its outstanding color, detailed artwork, popular subject matter, and the exciting adventures presented on the backs, all contribute to making this set one of nonsport collecting's all-time classics. It is also one of the few sets with tremendous crossover appeal, of great interest to comic and Superman collectors, as well as card collectors. A complete set of Superman is rare in any condition, especially because of the extremely rare high-number series cards (#49-72). The entire set of seventy-two cards has been graded and encapsulated by PSA. Sixty-four cards range in grade from Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt (including thirty-two NM-MT 8, twenty-two NM 7, and ten EX-MT 6) and eight cards are Ex and slightly lesser. The twenty-four high-number cards (#49-72) are particularly rare. Seventeen of the twenty-four rare high-number cards grade Ex-Mt or better, five grade Ex, and two Vg-Ex. The complete PSA condition composite follows: Thirty-two NM-MT 8: #2, 3, 8 (OC), 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 36, 37, 38, 40, 41, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 53, 57, and 58. Twenty-two NM 7: #4, 5, 6, 13, 15, 17, 18, 19, 27, 33, 34, 35, 39, 42, 50, 51, 56, 60, 62, 63, 68, and 69. Ten EX-MT 6: #7, 22, 26, 48, 52, 54, 61, 64, 65, and 67. Six EX 5: #1, 49, 55, 59 (EX+ 5.5), 66, and 72 (last card in set). Two VG-EX 4: #70 and 71. Thirty-one (43% of the set) of these cards are the highest- or second-highest graded examples in the PSA Population Report. This is a remarkable set. Very few complete sets have been assembled in any condition, but the assembly of a set of this caliber is particularly extraordinary. This is a world-class set of one of the most popular and rarely offered of all 1940s gum-card sets. Total 72 cards. Reserve $20,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $32,313
