1909-1911 T206 White Borders Ty Cobb Collection (2)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,819
Collection of two T206 White Borders of Ty Cobb. The same famous Carl Horner photograph was used as the basis for both the green and red background portrait cards of Cobb T206 set. This lot includes SGC-graded examples of both portrait cards (submitted by REA). These two cards were among the highlights from a very substantial totally untouched collection of 1910-era candy and tobacco cards consigned to this auction (all cards from this collection appear in the Internet-only section of the auction), which was saved for decades by the family of the original owner. 1) The striking green-background card (Sweet Caporal reverse) is the most difficult to find of Cobb's four poses in the T206 set. This is a very clean example with a strong portrait and light, even corner wear. Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. 2) The red-background card (Sweet Caporal reverse) is one of the great classics of the set. This example is graded VG 40 by SGC (stronger appearance, harshly graded due to a crease near the lower right corner). This is a very attractive pair of classic original Ty Cobb tobacco cards that have not seen the light of day since 1910. The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grades is $3,450. Total 2 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000.
