1911 E94 George Close Candy Ty Cobb - PSA NM 7
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $19,975
Addendum: The E94 Ty Cobb in this lot is an exceedingly rare orange background example. To many collectors, the fact that this card features Ty Cobb and is in extremely high grade are this card’s most important attributes, but to others the fact that it is an orange background example is equally noteworthy. They are virtually nonexistent. We have been told that only approximately fifteen orange background examples in total (of all players) are currently known to exist, and that so far each known player is unique. This is the first orange background E94 we can ever recall offering. The fact that this is a rare orange background card is not mentioned in the printed catalog description (simply because they were not even on our “radar” when we were writing up this lot). Our thanks to advanced type-card collector Leon Luckey for bringing this to our attention. It is greatly appreciated!
Graded NM 7 by PSA. Only example graded at this level by PSA with just one example graded higher. Extraordinary ultra-high grade PSA E94 example of Hall of Famer Ty Cobb. This is a gem of a card, one of the finest Ty Cobb caramel cards in existence, from one of the most desirable and highly collected of all 1910-era caramel-card sets. Bright, crisp, and perfectly clean, both front and back, with four sharp corners (a little wear on the upper left), a very slight natural tilt to the image, and a brilliant classic image of Cobb jumping to catch a ball, set against a bold orange background. Centered slightly to the left (approximately 35/65 L/R). The perfectly clean back features the checklist for the set. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. Of the three previously mentioned sets, E94s are the most difficult to find. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that refer to this company. Caramel cards, of course, are rarely found in such high grade. This is an extraordinary high-grade caramel card of the legendary Ty Cobb from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue, and one that would be an extremely significant highlight in even the most advanced “E” card, Hall of Famer, Ty Cobb, or world-class classic prewar card collection. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$15,000++. SOLD FOR $19,975
