1911 T5 Pinkerton Tobacco Minor League Cabinets (2)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,058
Two 1911 T5 Pinkerton cabinet cards, each a significant rarity featuring a different minor league player. T5 Pinkertons are among the rarest of all 1910-era tobacco issues. Few realize that this rare set includes a small number of minor leaguers in addition to Major Leaguers. These cabinet cards were available only by mail in exchange for coupons packaged with cigarettes produced by the Pinkerton Tobacco Co. Each T5 premium card (3.375 x 5.5 inches) when issued was designed with a real photo attached along the top of the reverse onto a thick cardboard cabinet-style mount (4.75 x 7.75 inches) with a surrounding embossed decorative imprint. Photos of both Major and minor league players were available to collectors and while the exact number of cabinet cards issued has never been determined, vintage advertising sheets made note that 376 different players were represented in the set. 1) #1613 Winger; a member of Adrian of the Southern Michigan Association. Aside from a insignificant tiny tear to the photo in the lower left corner and a few tiny stains on the reverse of the mount (both flaws so minor they are essentially of no consequence), the cabinet card is in Near Mint condition. 2) #1106 Denny Sullivan; a member of Toledo in the American Association. In Excellent condition (upon close inspection the left side of the mount displays a hint of light-blue markings, extremely minor and mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy). These are two very sharp-looking cards and we would not be surprised if these were the only surviving examples of each. Total: 2 cabinet cards. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,058
