1910 E-UNC Candy Honus Wagner

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,700

Graded POOR 10 by SGC. Incredibly rare circa 1910 E-UNC candy card of Hall of Famer Honus Wagner. This fascinating Honus Wagner card is approximately fifty times rarer than a T206 Wagner! We know of only one other example of Wagner from this rare set, from the legendary collection of hobby pioneer and author of the The Handbook to US Early Candy and Gum Baseball Issues (1969), Richard Egan (though we have seen a few examples of other players from this set over the years). Very little is known about the production of this unusual issue. The reason for this is both because of their great rarity and the fact that the manufacturer is not identified. Advanced collectors, price guides, and grading companies have taken to referring to the set as the "E-UNC Candy" set. Perhaps someday more information will surface. What is known is that they are clearly a 1910-era set, almost certainly issued with candy or caramel, and the artwork and poses of some cards (including Wagner) are unique to this issue. The colorful cards are designed very similarly to many other candy cards of the 1910-era (most notably the blank-backed E104 set), and also have blank backs. The player's name is printed below the image with a team designation. It is extremely rare to find even a common player sample card from this issue, let alone a major Hall of Famer. This is the first example of Wagner or any other player from this set we have ever had the opportunity to offer! A card example from this set is missing from almost every advanced sample card collection. Wagner is featured in full uniform in a batting pose, which is unique to this issue. The card has various mostly minor flaws, including creasing and remnants of scrapbook removal on the reverse. While its modest SGC grade is appropriate, this is still a very attractive example of an extreme rarity and would be a worthy addition to any rare caramel-card, world-class Honus Wagner, or sample-card collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
