1910 T209 Contentnea First Series Complete SGC-Graded Set (16)

Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $11,163

Extremely rare and extraordinarily high grade complete sixteen-card set of 1910 T209 Contentnea First Series cards, entirely graded by SGC (all submitted by REA). This is an unbelievably strong set of these extremely striking 1910-era tobacco cards featuring players from the Virginia League, Carolina Association, and Eastern League. These are by far the highest-grade examples of these rare minor-league tobacco cards we have ever seen! We grade this set overall Ex-Mt to Near Mint, although most have an even stronger appearance. We are not sure why SGC graded the cards as it did, but suspect it may be related to the rubber stamped "Factory No. 12, 4th Dist. N.C." on the reverse of almost all of these cards. This stamp is natural to the set. It is how they were made and distributed by Contentnea Tobacco. The most minute surface crease here or there (you practically need a magnifying glass with the power of the Hubble telescope to see these) may be responsible for the downgrading of several cards; others, we are not sure why they have been downgraded from NM. This is a simply unbelievable ultra high-grade set and in this particular case REA grades every card in this set far higher than SGC. The complete SGC condition composite follows: Two EX/NM 80: Martin and Stubbe. One EX 60: Booles. Nine VG/EX 50: Bourquise, Cooper, Cowell, Crockett, Hoffman, McGeehan, Pope, Sisson, and Walsh. Four VG 40: Armstrong, Fullenwider, Gilmore, and Lane. Fourteen of the cards have the factory rubber stamp on the reverse. Every card is bright and crisp, with vibrant colors, and flawless registration. T209 Contentnea First Series cards are rarely offered as a complete set, and are highly prized by both minor-league collectors and tobacco-card collectors. This is a gorgeous set! Total 16 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000+. SOLD FOR $11,163
