1909-1910 E97 C. A. Briggs Co. Complete SGC-Graded Set (30) Plus Three Variations

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $16,450

Extremely rare 1909-1910 complete 30-card set of E97 C. A. Briggs Co. This set is closely related to several other candy sets from the era, which share the same format, and, in many cases, the same player image. The cards are very similar in design to their E93 counterparts and can most easily be distinguished by the attractive brown-printed checklist of the complete set and the advertisement for "C. A. Briggs Co., Lozenge Makers, Boston, Mass." along the bottom on the reverse of each card. As is the case with most 1910-era tobacco and “E” card issues, E97 C. A. Briggs Company cards each measure approximately 1.5 x 2.75 inches. The set does not include the four variation cards (three team changes and one spelling variation), but does include two black-and-white proof variation cards (Dolan and Nichols/Phila.) and an uncheckisted variation of Devore that is printed without periods after the "N'" and "Y" of "N.Y." in the team-identification at the bottom of the card. Twenty-six cards range in grade from Vg to Ex, and seven cards lesser. We have sent all thirty cards from the set (plus the three additional cards included) to be graded and encapsulated by SGC: SGC Report: One EX+ 70: Bradley. Six EX 60: Austin, Birmingham, Hartsel, Kelly (HOF), McConnell, and Nichols (Nicholls, Cleveland). Eight VG/EX 50: Camnitz, Carrigan, Devore, Dygert, Keeler (HOF), Kleinow, Meyers, and Schlei. Eleven VG 40: Davis, Doolan, Durham, Heinchman, Kroh, McIntyre, Moore, Murray, Steinfeld, Sullivan (Chicago), and Young (Boston). Three GOOD 30: Devore (unchecklisted no periods after "N" and "Y" in team identification), Hemphill, and Nichols/B&W "proof" (Nicholls, Philadelphia). Two FAIR 20: Dolan (B&W "proof") and Rossman. Two Auth: Bransfield and Mullin. Almost never offered in set form, this is only the second complete set of E97 C. A. Briggs we have ever presented. The set is in exceptionally fine condition, especially for caramel cards, which, because they were issued with candy, one card per package, they did not easily escape damage or hold up well to wear over the years. There are many particularly strong cards in this set. This is a beautiful complete set of E97 Briggs Co., one of the most popular, elusive, and colorful of all “E” card issues. Total 33 cards (complete set of 30 cards plus three variations). Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++. SOLD FOR $16,450
