1911 E100 Bishop & Co. PCL Type I Buck Weaver
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,406
Graded VG 40 by SGC. Buck Weaver, a member of the infamous 1919 Black Sox, has reached cult status in the collecting world. His cards routinely sell for more than Hall of Famers from the same sets in which he appears. Unfortunately for collectors, Weaver appears in very few sets. This is an outstanding example of what is perhaps Buck Weaver's rarest card: his 1911 E100 Bishop card which pictures him with San Francisco of the Pacific Coast League, before his Major League playing days with the Chicago White Sox. The thirty-card 1911 E100 Bishop & Co. set is one of the rarest of all Pacific Coast League issues and also one of the rarest of all 1910-era candy-card issues. The set is also among the most interesting and distinctively designed of all caramel-card issues. This is an extremely attractive card of Weaver in a batting pose set against a bright red background. The card is very well centered, perfectly clean front and back, has light, even corner wear, and snow-white borders. If not for a light horizontal crease running through the center, the card would easily have graded Excellent. This is a very strong, attractive, and very fairly graded example (with an overall appearance substantially stronger than its technically accurate SGC grade) of the key card from this scarce minor league issue. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $4,406
