1911 T205 Gold Border Christy Mathewson - SGC NM 84

Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $8,813

Graded NM 84 by SGC. Absolutely stunning, unbelievably high-grade Christy Mathewson card from the T205 Gold Borders, one of the most popular of all 1910-era tobacco issues. This is a simply extraordinary example, literally one of the best in the world, of one of vintage baseball-card collecting's great classics. It is without question one of the finest T205 Mathewson cards that we have ever seen. This card is a traffic-stopper. It is impossible to look at this gem without saying "Wow!" Any T205 Gold Border in this extraordinary condition would be extremely noteworthy, let alone an example of key Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson. Crisp and clean, both front and back. The card displays only the slightest hint of white at the extreme tips of the corners, visible only under the closest inspection. The easily-chipped gold borders are without any white showing whatsoever. This striking gem has flawless colors, virtually perfect centering, and particularly large full borders. The reverse of the card is also exceptionally bright and clean with crisp, bold red text. Advertising for Sweet Caporal on reverse. This is an amazing ultra high-grade T205 example of Christy Mathewson, one of baseball's greatest legends, from one of collecting's most classic and condition-sensitive sets. Out of 230 T205 Mathewsons graded by SGC to date, only one has ever been graded higher (SGC NM+ 86). The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grade is $7,500. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000+. SOLD FOR $8,813
