1887 N690 Kalamazoo Bats Jack Clements

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,644

Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. Tremendous high-grade Kalamazoo Bats tobacco card of A's catcher Jack Clements. Kalamazoo Bats are revered for their great rarity, unusual outdoor poses, unusual size, and unique design. The SGC-assigned grade does not do this card justice. This is an outstanding example, in extremely high grade for Kalamazoo Bats, that perfectly showcases the great appeal of this rare nineteenth-century tobacco issue. Extremely clean, both front and back, with exceptional contrast, and centered to the left. The photo is particularly strong, and with an abundance of interesting details that Kalamazoos are so well known for (such as the bleachers in the background and Clements' classic nineteenth-century pillbox cap). There is a very light surface crease in the extreme upper left. The most insignificant surface chip on the middle of the right edge is apparently responsible for the downgrading by SGC to Good; it otherwise would grade at least Vg-Ex. This is a very attractive Kalamazoo Bats sample. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $2,644
