1921 and 1922 E121 American Caramel - Series of 80 and 120 SGC-Graded Collection (93 including 27 Hall of Famers!)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $6,463

Rarely offered extremely substantial collection of ninety different (plus three duplicates) E121 American Caramel cards (34 cards from Series 80 and 58 cards from Series 120), highlighted by twenty-seven Hall of Famers, including two poses of Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, and two poses of Walter Johnson. All ninety-three cards have been graded and encapsulated by SGC (except seven PSA and one GAI). Each unnumbered card, which measures 2 x 3.25 inches, features a black-and-white photo of the player. This is an exceptionally impressive collection of cards from one of the most substantial and important sets from the 1920s. These are the classics of the early 1920s! 1) 1921 E121 American Caramel Series of 80 (34 of 121 cards): Two EX+ 70: Donovan and Gardner. Two EX 60: Heilmann (HOF; PSA EX 5) and Holke. Six VG/EX 50: Baker (HOF), Faber/white uniform (HOF; PSA VG-EX 4), Hornsby (HOF), Kerr (PSA VG-EX 4), Mamaux (GAI VG-EX 4), and Sisler/batting (HOF). Three VG 40: Cobb/Mgr., looking right (HOF), Deal, and Speaker/manager - large (HOF). Three GOOD 30: Bancroft/leaping (HOF), Dauss (PSA GOOD 2), and Roush/C.F. (HOF). Eight FAIR 20: Alexander/right arm forward (HOF), Burns, Hooper (HOF), Jacobson, Leonard (Holsum Bread back), McInnis, Peckinbaugh/incorrect name, and Wambsganss. Seven POOR 10: Bush, Collins (HOF), Johnson/hands at chest (HOF), Johnston (PSA PR-FR 1), Killefer, Morton, and Vitt. Three Authentic: Bagby, McGraw (HOF), and Pfeffer. 2) 1922 E121 American Caramel Series of 120 (59 of 127 cards): Two VG/EX 50: Cobb/throwing (HOF) and Shawkey. Ten VG 40: Fewster, Flagstead, Frisch (HOF), Gleason, Grimm, Martin, McGraw (HOF), Schalk/catching (HOF), Shocker, and Stock. Nineteen GOOD 30: Bush, Causey, Danforth, Douglas, Gaston, Gharrity, Hodge, Harper, Meusel, Miller, Nehf, Rogers, Ruth/"Babe" - holding bird (HOF), Ryan, Schalk/catching (HOF), Shea, Sheely, Snyder, and Ward. Ten FAIR 20: Adams, Flack, Gaston, Judge, Mails, Nunamaker, Smith, Southworth (HOF), Toporcer, and Walker. Eight POOR 10: Glazner, Hornsby/O.F. (HOF), Johnson (HOF; PSA PR-FR 1), Killefer/throwing, Neale, Oeschger, Smith, and Youngs (HOF). Ten Authentic: Barber, Bigbee/correct name, Bigbee/ "L." on front, Causey, Cooper, Coveleski (HOF), Falk, Haines (HOF), Mostil, and Rixey (HOF). The condition varies but ,as can easily be seen, most cards have an appearance far stronger than their technically accurate SGC-assigned grades. These cards are apparently very easy to grade harshly. Even the lowest-graded cards in most cases are very attractive, and a card such as the Ty Cobb (graded VG 40) is a beautiful card that could at a glance be mistaken for Excellent (and has been graded VG only due to a very light crease and light, even corner wear). This is a quality group! Such large collections of E121 are rarely seen or offered. In fact, this is the largest collection of E121 American Caramel we have ever offered! This collection could provide the foundation for the assembly of an outstanding complete set, or easily be broken up. The twenty-seven Hall of Famers (including two Ruths and Cobb) all alone add up very quickly. Total 93 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $6,463
