1926 Kut Outs Yankees Die-Cuts Collection Including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig (5)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $6,463
Collection of five Yankees die-cuts (of the ten issued), including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, from the rare 1926 Kut Outs Die-Cut series. The Kut Outs series is one of the most unusual and distinctive sets of the era, and is especially noteworthy both for its design and for its inclusion of Ruth and Gehrig (as well as other members of Murderers' Row) at the peak of their powers and at a time during which few other card sets were issued. The Kut Outs Ruth included in this collection is in extremely high grade (SGC EX 60), which is all the more noteworthy as these cards are so easily damaged due to their die-cut design and intended use (they were meant to be folded to stand up). The Kut Outs Lou Gehrig is one of his first-ever issued cards and one of just several cards that are widely recognized as qualifying for consideration as his rookie card. This rare 1920s die-cut series was comprised exclusively of Yankees and Giants players, and, according to The Standard Catalog, were actually sold as complete team sets for 10 cents. Each black-and-white card is blank backed and measures approximately 2 x 4.5 inches (heights vary slightly depending on the pose). This set is very similar to the 1927 Middy Bread series, which featured Cardinals and Browns players, and were obviously designed and printed by the same manufacturer. This group includes five Hall of Famers, all New York Yankees, each graded and encapsulated by SGC (except one): Earle Combs (VG 40), Lou Gehrig (heavy creasing and the glove hand may have been reattached, submitted to SGC but not holdered, still a great-looking card), Miller Huggins (VG 40), Herb Pennock (VG 40), and Babe Ruth (EX 60). This is a very attractive collection, including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, the two key cards in the set, from one of card collecting's rarest 1920s issues. Total 5 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $6,463
