1921 E253 Oxford Confectionery Complete Set (20 cards): #1 SGC Set Registry!

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $26,438

Presented is an extraordinary complete set of twenty cards (of which fourteen are Hall of Famers, including Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb) issued by Oxford Confectionery of Oxford, Pennsylvania, all graded and encapsulated by SGC. The Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb cards are incredible high-grade examples (both EX/NM 80 by SGC), and are among the numerous significant highlights of the set. This is by far the finest E253 Oxford Confectionery set we have ever seen, let alone presented at auction. Oxford Confectionery issued this unusual set in 1921, at the same time its larger competitors were also issuing baseball cards with caramel treats. Pennsylvania was a very popular area for candy manufacturers in the early 1920s, but Oxford Confectionery was a much smaller manufacturer than other Pennsylvania candy companies that issued baseball cards, and this no doubt relates to the far greater rarity of E253 Oxfords compared to other early 1920s caramel cards. Collectors have always appreciated the rarity and primitive charm of this distinctive candy issue, which features photos that are unique to this set. Oxfords appear to have been regionally issued, as they are rarely found outside of the Pennsylvania area. This set is rated as the number-one set on the SGC Set Registry with an overall grade average of 65.58. This is a beautiful high-grade set and especially strong for Oxfords, which are printed on card stock that is particularly prone to wear, and almost all of these cards have an appearance far superior to their assigned grades. This complete set has been very carefully assembled by an extremely dedicated collector over a period of many years, and represents a tremendous collecting achievement. SGC Condition Report: Five EX/NM 80: Alexander (HOF), Carey (HOF), Cobb (HOF), Ruth (HOF), and Schalk (HOF). Three EX+ 70: Holke, Perkins, and Williams. Five EX 60: Bancroft (HOF), Collins (HOF), Frisch (HOF), Grimes (HOF), and Roush (HOF). Four VG/EX 50: Hornsby (HOF), Meadows, Pratt, and Speaker (HOF). Three VG 40: Johnson (HOF), Sisler (HOF), and Witt. The extraordinary across-the-board quality of this set is not an accident. The consignor has invested literally years in assembling and upgrading this set. This is an extraordinary high-grade set, the finest on the SGC Registry, of this distinctive and rare 1920s candy-card issue. Total 20 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000++.
