1927 E210 York Caramels Complete PSA- and SGC-Graded Set Including Ruth and Cobb (60)
Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $8,225
Rarely offered complete sixty-card set of 1927 E210 York Caramels (Type 1) cards, including an incredible thirty-one Hall of Famers highlighted by Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb. One of the few issues of the late 1920s and very rarely seen in complete set form. In fact, this is the first complete set of E210 York Caramels that we have ever offered. All sixty cards are graded and encapsulated by either PSA (47) or SGC (13). The PSA and SGC grades in this set range from Good to Ex-Mt condition (one Ex-Mt, ten Ex, twenty-seven Vg-Ex, sixteen Vg, and six Good), though even the lowest-graded cards in this set are sharp-looking cards which have been very harshly graded due to minor faults. This is an extraordinary set which has been assembled by an extremely dedicated collector over a period of many years. PSA condition composite (47 cards): Eight EX 5: #12, 24 (MK), 31, 32 Carey (HOF), 33, 34, 39, and 54 Sisler (HOF). Twenty-two VG-EX 4: #1 Grimes (HOF), 4 Faber (HOF), 8 Pennock (HOF), 10 Sewell (HOF), 13 Hornsby (HOF), 14 Traynor (HOF), 15, 16 Rixey (HOF), 18, 19 Bancroft (HOF), 20 Kelly (HOF), 25 Wilson rookie (HOF; actually pictured is Art Wilson), 28 Speaker (HOF), 29, 36 Rice (HOF), 42 McGraw (HOF), 44 Alexander (HOF), 45 Johnson (HOF), 46 Terry rookie (HOF), 48, 50 Frisch (HOF), and 52. Twelve VG 3: #6 Ruth (HOF, centered to the right, with light wear on the corners, a couple very minor surface creases, and two light caramel stains; it is interesting to note that Ruth is actually pictured in a Boston Red Sox uniform on this card), 17, 23 Schalk (HOF), 27 Cobb (HOF), 37, 40, 43 Robinson (HOF), 51, 53 Roush (HOF), 55, 56, and 57 Coveleski (HOF). Five GOOD 2: #9, 21, 58, 59, and 60 (last card in set). SGC condition composite (13 cards): One EX/NM 80: #41 Harris (HOF). Two EX 60: #35 and 38. Five VG/EX 50: #3, 5 Hartnett (HOF), 11, 26, and 47 Collins (HOF). Four VG 40: #2, 22 Heilmann (HOF), 30 Haines (HOF), and 49 Goslin (HOF). One GOOD 30: #7. York Caramels issued this unusual set in 1927. The set is identical in design to several other issues of the era, such as Tharps Ice Cream, Sweetman, and Harrington's Ice Cream, but with advertising for the "York Caramel Co." of York, Pennsylvania, on the reverse. Collectors have always appreciated the rarity and primitive charm of this distinctive candy issue. York Caramels appear to have been regionally issued, as they are rarely found outside of the Pennsylvania area. This is an extraordinary medium- to high-grade complete set of these distinctive and rare 1920s cards. Total 60 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000+.
