1934-1936 R327 Diamond Stars Near-Complete Set (89 of 108)

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $29,375

World-class near-complete set of R327 Diamond Stars consists of eighty-nine different of the 108 cards in the set, including twenty-eight Hall of Famers and seven rare high numbers. These cards are part of an exciting original "childhood" collection consigned to this auction. These cards were assembled in the 1930s, and have remained literally untouched since that time, saved by the family of the original owner. We were so impressed with this Diamond Stars collection that, for the convenience of potential bidders, we have selected a very significant number of cards (67 of 89 cards, far more than normal) for grading and encapsulation by PSA. While we have tried to select the most important key cards and the strongest condition cards for professional grading, with few exceptions the ungraded cards are still very attractive and share the same overall pleasing aesthetics. The PSA grades are as follows: One MINT 9: #29 Rolfe (one of only four graded at this level). Fourteen NM-MT 8: #32 Rice (HOF), 35 Averill (HOF), 39 Hubbell (HOF), 45, 46, 53 (OC), 68, 73, 75, 79, 81, 85, 87, and 90. Four NM+ 7.5: #48 Ferrell (HOF), 83 Waner (HOF), 89, and 99 Traynor (HOF). Thirty-one NM 7: #8, 9 Cochrane (HOF), 16 Waner (HOF), 26 Martin, 31 Cuyler (HOF), 33, 34, 37, 38, 41, 43 Lyons (HOF), 44 Hornsby (HOF), 47, 58, 59 Bottomley (HOF), 61, 65, 66 Medwick (HOF), 72, 74 Lazzeri (HOF), 76, 77 Gehringer (HOF), 80, 84, 88, 91 Harris (HOF), 93, 94, 101 High #, 105 Lombardi (HOF), and 107 High #. Three EX-MT+ 6.5: #25, 86 Crosetti, and 98 High #. Eleven EX-MT 6: #5, 28 Lopez (HOF), 36 Lombardi, 50 Ott, 51, 56, 57, 60 Ruffing (HOF), 64 Foxx (HOF), 78, and 104 High #. One EX 5: #22. One VG-EX 4: #27 Traynor (HOF). One GOOD 2: #4. The balance of the cards grade as follows: nineteen are Ex (or slightly better) including #30 Manush (HOF), 63 Jackson (HOF), 95 Appling (HOF), 102 High #, 103 Dickey (HOF), and 106 High #; one Vg (#52); one Gd (#108); and one Pr (#2 Simmons - HOF). The condition report speaks for itself, but to summarize: a total of 50 cards range in grade from Near Mint to Nr/Mt-Mt, 34 range from Ex to Ex-Mt+, and only five cards are in slightly lesser grades. This is stunning high-grade collection of one of the 1930s' most popular issues, representing a tremendous start for one of the sharpest sets of Diamond Stars in the collecting world. The SMR value for the sixty-seven PSA graded cards (not including the one qualified card and the twenty-two ungraded cards) is $15,782. Total 89 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+.
