1933 R319 Goudey #53 Babe Ruth

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $9,400

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Stunning example of one of Babe Ruth's most classic cards, #53 with yellow background from the 1933 Goudey series. This card was one of the great highlights of a very significant totally untouched collection of 1933 and 1934 Goudey gum cards consigned to this auction, which was saved for decades by the family of the original owner. This card, which was no doubt once housed in one of the 162 1933 Goudey wrappers that were saved with the collection (and are offered as their own lot), looks like it was just pulled from a pack! This is an extraordinary card, especially for the grade. It looks pack-fresh. It is bright and clean, both front and back, with four sharp corners, flawlessly brilliant colors, and perfect printing registration (which can sometimes be a problem with this card). It is centered slightly to the right. The back is perfectly clean with bold green print set against a white background. It has been downgraded by SGC due to a very light surface wrinkle above the "H" in Ruth's middle name, a tiny dimple on the top border above Ruth's cap, and a fingernail indentation on the back. All three above mentioned flaws are extremely minor and have absolutely no impact on the outstanding pack-fresh Nr/Mt-Mt eye appeal this card displays. This is a magnificent high-quality card that presents a unique opportunity. This is an extraordinary card, and it gets our vote for the best VG/EX 50 1933 Goudey #53 Babe Ruth in the history of the world! It appears much stronger than Vg-Ex, and shares virtually all important elements in common with examples of a much higher technical grade. The "yellow background" pose of Babe Ruth is, without a doubt, his most difficult to obtain and sought-after card in the 1933 Goudey set. For some reason this card is also a condition rarity compared with other Ruth cards in the set. This is an outstanding 1933 Goudey #53 Ruth card that is ideal for a collector that is not interested in spending the many thousands (or even tens of thousands) of dollars an example in a technically higher grade would require. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $9,400
