1933 R319 Goudey Gum Near-Complete Set Including All Ruths and Gehrigs (216 of 240)

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $26,438

The 1933 Goudey set is universally recognized as the single most popular and collected of all 1930s gum issues, and one of the most significant of all prewar baseball-card issues. Presented is a stunning medium- to high-grade near-complete set of 1933 Goudey Gum, including 216 of the 240 cards in the set. The near-set is highlighted by fifty-seven Hall of Famers including four Babe Ruths and two Lou Gehrigs. These cards are part of a large original "childhood" collection consigned to this auction that was assembled in 1933 and has remained literally untouched since the 1930s, saved by the family of the original owner. There is some serious value to this set represented just by the four Babe Ruth and two Lou Gehrig cards. Three of these six key cards are graded VG-EX+ 4.5 by PSA (#144 Ruth, 160 Gehrig, 181 Ruth) and the other three are graded VG-EX 4 (#53 Ruth, 92 Gehrig, 149 Ruth). These six PSA-graded key cards (four Ruths and two Gehrigs) alone list for $11,950 in the SMR (this figure does not include the other 210 cards in the set). 120 of the 216 cards range from Ex to Nr/Mt+, sixty-eight cards range from Vg to Vg-Ex, and twenty-eight cards are in lesser grades. Besides the four Babe Ruth cards and both Lou Gehrig cards, we have selected an additional ten cards (for a total of sixteen cards) to be graded and encapsulated by PSA. Keys: #1 Bengough (Gd), 2 Vance (Vg), 5 Herman (Fr), 7 Lyons (Fr), 19 Dickey (Ex), 20 Terry (Vg), 22 Traynor (Vg), 23 Cuyler (Vg), 25 Waner (Ex), 29 Foxx (Vg), 31 Lazzeri (Gd-Vg), 35 Simmons (Fr), 42 Collins (Vg-Ex), 44 Bottomley (Ex), 47 Manush (Pr), 49 Frisch (Fr), 53 Ruth (PSA VG-EX 4), 56 Ruffing (25/75 L/R, otherwise Ex-Mt), 60 Hoyt (Ex), 63 Cronin (PSA EX 5), 64 Grimes (Vg-Ex), 73 Haines (20/80 L/R, otherwise Nr/Mt), 74 Rixey (Ex), 76 Cochrane (PSA EX+ 5.5), 79 Faber (30/70 L/R, otherwise Ex), 89 Speaker (PSA EX 5), 92 Gehrig (PSA VG-EX 4), 102 Jackson (Ex), 103 Combs (Vg-Ex), 107 Manush (PSA NM 7), 117 Maranville (Vg-Ex/Ex), 119 Hornsby (Vg-Ex), 128 Klein (Ex), 133 Lindstrom (Ex), 134 Rice (Vg-Ex), 138 Pennock (Gd-Vg), 144 Ruth (PSA VG-EX+ 4.5), 147 Durocher (Ex), 149 Ruth (PSA VG-EX 4), 154 Foxx (80/20 L/R, otherwise Ex), 158 Berg (Ex), 160 Gehrig (PSA VG-EX+ 4.5), 164 Waner (PSA EX-MT 6), 165 Sewell (PSA NM-MT 8), 168 Goslin (PSA NM 7), 181 Ruth (PSA VG-EX+ 4.5), 187 Manush (90/10 L/R, otherwise Ex), 188 Hornsby (PSA EX-MT 6), 189 Cronin (Vg-Ex), 194 Averill (75/25 L/R, otherwise Ex-Mt), 197 Ferrell (Ex), 202 Hartnett (20/80 L/R, otherwise Ex), 207 Ott (PSA EX-MT 6), 211 Wilson (Vg-Ex), 220 Grove (10/90 L/R, otherwise Nr/Mt), 222 Gehringer (90/10 L/R, otherwise Ex-Mt), 223 Dean (20/80 L/R and 80/20 T/B, otherwise Ex), 227 Herman (10/90 L/R and 90/10 T/B, otherwise Ex-Mt), 229 Vaughan (PSA EX-MT 6), and 230 Hubbell (Pr).
