1934-1936 R318 Batter-Up Near-Complete Set (189/192)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,050

This near-complete set of 1934-1936 R318 Batter-Up includes 189 different of the 192 cards in the set, highlighted by fifty-three Hall of Famers, including Dizzy Dean, Rogers Hornsby, Jimmie Foxx, Hank Greenberg, and many others. Missing only the following three high numbers for completion: #87, 102, and 162. The R318 Batter-Up set is universally recognized as one of the most significant of all prewar baseball-card issues. Their striking colors, unusual standup design, and rarity compared to other 1930s sets make "Batter-Ups" one of the most fascinating, distinctive, and difficult-to-complete of all sets from the 1930s. These cards are designed with die-cut backgrounds that can be punched out and folded back to allow each card to stand up. Because of this design, many R318s are naturally found in damaged condition, and in many cases are found with the die-cut backgrounds entirely lost. All of the card backgrounds in this collection (except #98) are complete and intact. 10% grade Vg-Ex, 50% range from Gd to Vg; with few exceptions the remaining 40% are in similar condition from the fronts, but with most in technically lower grades only due to minor back damage (a tape mark, paper loss, writing, or ink stamps). Keys: #1 Berger (Gd), 3 Lopez (Vg), 5 Hubbell (Gd), 6 Terry (Gd), 8 Bottomley (Fr), 10 Ferrell (Gd-Vg), 14 Traynor (Gd-Vg), 16 Hafey (Vg), 17 Waner (Ex), 21 Vaughn (Vg), 23 Gomez (Gd), 24 Averill (Vg), 25 Cochrane (Gd), 27 Ott (Vg-Ex/Ex), 28 Foxx (Gd-Vg), 30 Dickey (Vg), 31 Grove (Gd), 32 Cronin (Gd), 33 Frisch (Vg), 34 Simmons (Gd), 35 Hornsby (Gd-Vg), 36 Lyons (Gd), 37 Maranville (Fr-Gd), 42 Gehringer (Fr), 45 Lazzeri (Pr-Fr), 57 Greenberg (Fr), 64 Dean (Pr-Fr), 73 Wilson (Gd), 77 Manush (Gd), 85 Goslin (Pr), 86 Gomez (Vg/Vg-Ex), 100 Traynor (Vg), 111 Hayes/Lyons (Gd-Vg), 113 Averill (Pr-Fr), 115 Andrews/Bottomley (Gd), 117 Dickey (Fr), 119 Lyons (Vg-Ex), 122 Lindstrom (Fr-Gd), 124 Appling (Vg), 126 Ferrell (Gd), 129 Lombardi (Vg), 130 Gehringer (Fr), 136 Hartnett (Fr), 138 Herman (Fr-Gd), 144 Foxx (Vg), 145 Medwick (Gd), 149 Berg (Vg), 153 Grove (Gd), 156 Durocher (Gd-Vg), 157 Waner (Gd), 173 Frisch (Vg), 179 Bottomley (Gd), 180 Jackson (Vg), 183 Cronin (Gd), and 185 Klein (Fr-Gd). This is a very attractive and rarely offered near-complete set of this unusual and very substantial 1930s prewar issue, which is highlighted by fifty-three Hall of Famers. Total 189 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $7,050
