1952 Topps Near-Complete Set (383 of 407) Including #311 Mantle SGC EX 60

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $32,313

1952 Topps near-complete set of 383 cards (missing only the following twenty-four high numbers for completion: #314 Campy, 317, 318, 319, 321 Black, 323, 333 Reese, 341, 343, 347, 348, 350, 354, 359, 370, 372 McDougald, 373, 374, 382, 384, 386, 390, 398, and 399). This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire a near-complete set of 1952 Topps, the premier postwar gum-card set, with many key card and condition highlights, yet without spending the fortune that this set would cost in a higher grade, or the considerably higher amount that it would almost certainly cost to put this set together one card at a time. This mid-grade near-set is highlighted by very attractive examples of key cards #311 Mickey Mantle, graded EX 60 by SGC, and #407 Ed Mathews rookie, graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. While the condition of cards from this set spans several grades, even the lesser-graded cards are very pleasing and exhibit bright colors and crisp focus. The low numbers (#1-310) grade as follows: 60% range from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex overall), 35% Vg (with a few slightly lesser), and 5% trimmed. The rare high numbers (#311-407) grade as follows: 80% range from Vg to Vg-Ex (includes a few Ex and Ex-Mt), and 20% lesser (mostly Gd). We have selected eleven cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC and thirty cards were already graded by PSA when we received the set. Low-Number Keys (1-310): #1 Pafko (SGC VG 40), 2 Runnels (Vg-Ex), 11 Rizzuto (Vg), 20 Loes RC (Gd-Vg), 22 DiMaggio (10/90 L/R, otherwise Ex-Mt), 26 Irvin (Gd-Vg), 29 Kluszewski (PSA EX 5), 33 Spahn (90/10 L/R, otherwise Nr/Mt), 36 Hodges (Gd-Vg), 37 Snider (PSA EX 5), 48 Page/correct (Vg-Ex), 49 Sain/correct (Ex), 57 Lopat (PSA VG-EX 4), 59 Roberts (PSA VG 3), 65 Slaughter (75/25 T/B, otherwise Ex-Mt), 66 Roe (Ex), 67 Reynolds (Ex), 88 Feller (Ex), 91 Schoendienst (Vg), 122 Jensen (25/75 T/B, otherwise Ex), 129 Mize (Ex), 175 Martin RC (Ex), 191 Berra (SGC EX+ 70), 195 Minoso RC (miscut no left border, otherwise Ex-Mt), 215 Bauer (Vg-Ex/Ex), 216 Ashburn (SGC EX 60), 227 Garagiola (diamond cut, otherwise Ex), 243 Doby (PSA VG-EX 4), 246 Kell (90/10 L/R, otherwise Ex), 250 Erskine (diamond cut, otherwise Ex), 261 Mays (SGC Auth, trimmed), 268 Lemon (Vg), 274 Branca (Vg), and 277 Wynn (Fr). Seven additional low-number cards are graded by PSA: #35 (EX-MT 6), 53 (EX 5), 60 (VG-EX 4), 71 (VG-EX 4), 78 (VG 3), 292 (EX-MT 6), and 297 (EX-MT 6). High-Number Keys (#311-407): #311 Mantle (SGC EX 60), 312 Robinson (SGC GOOD 30), 313 Thomson (SGC Auth, slight trim), 315 Durocher (SGC EX 60), 316 High # (PSA VG-EX 4), 320 High # (PSA VG 3), 326 Shuba RC (Vg+), 327 High # (PSA VG-EX 4), 328 High # (SGC VG 40), 331 High # (PSA GOOD 2), 334 High # (PSA GOOD 2), 336 High # (PSA EX 5), 342 Labine RC (PSA VG-EX 4), 344 Blackwell (Vg), 351 Dark (Gd), 356 High # (PSA VG-EX 4), 357 Burgess (Vg-Ex), 361 High # (SGC EX/NM 80), 362 High # (PSA EX 5), 365 High # (PSA VG-EX 4 [MK]), 367 High # (PSA VG 3), 369 Groat RC (Vg), 377 Dressen (Gd), 378 High # (PSA VG-EX 4), 380 High # (PSA VG-EX 4), 381 High # (PSA VG-EX 4), 385 High # (PSA VG-EX 4), 387 High # (PSA VG-EX 4), 392 Wilhelm RC (Gd-Vg), 394 Herman (Vg+), 396 Williams RC (Vg), 400 Dickey (PSA VG-EX 4), 401 High # (PSA GOOD 2), 406 Nuxhall RC (Gd), and 407 Mathews (SGC VG/EX 50). The amazing thing about a quality medium-grade 1952 Topps near-set such as this is the outstanding value it offers compared to cards in higher grade, as well as the comfort provided by the natural potential "break value" associated with such a set. This is a rarely offered, extremely pleasing mixed-grade near-complete set of one of baseball-card collecting's premier issues, with numerous significant highlights. Total 383 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000++. SOLD FOR $32,313
