1887 N172 Old Judge Ned Hanlon

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,175

Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. VG-EX appearance! Very striking 1887 N172 Old Judge example of Hall of Famer Ned Hanlon (Detroit - fielding) with an elaborate studio background. Hanlon was a Major League ballplayer with six different teams from 1880 to 1892. He was a consistent player, accumulating over 1300 hits during his career, but he is best known for his success as manager. Hanlon was the manager of the Baltimore Orioles from 1892 to 1898, a span which witnessed the club capturing three pennants and two World Championships. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1996. This is an extremely attractive card with a perfectly clean front, no creases, outstanding picture quality and contrast, and even corner wear. The extremely harsh SGC grade on this card is due to back damage common to Old Judges: glue residue and slight paper loss (from scrapbook removal long ago), and light pencil notations on the blank reverse. Without reference to the reverse back damage (which as noted is very common with Old Judges), the card is in Vg-Ex condition. This is a very striking high-quality example of a particularly difficult-to-find Old Judge Hall of Famer. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,175
