1953 Red Man Tobacco Complete Set (52)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $9,400

Presented is a stunning high-grade complete set of fifty-two 1953 Red Man tobacco cards (all with tabs). For years our consignor, an extremely old-time collector, has been very enthusiastic about the condition of his Red Man tobacco set. When we would speak with him about consignments, every year he would always mention the high-quality of his set and when he does decide to sell it we should get the whole set graded for him. Well, we hear this often from consignors regarding their cards, and most of the time although their cards appear Nr/Mt or better to them, the grading companies usually have a much different opinion. Not the case with this set! When it arrived, we had to admit, it was a special set! We were so impressed with this set that, for the convenience of potential bidders, we have selected a very significant number of cards (far more than normal, a total of twenty-one cards out of the fifty in the set) for grading by PSA. While we have tried to select the most important key cards for professional grading, with few exceptions the ungraded cards remaining in the set maintain or are very close to the same overall pleasing aesthetics. The PSA grades are as follows: Two MINT 9: #17N Ennis (highest graded!) and 26N Musial (HOF, highest graded!). Six NM-MT+ 8.5: #4A Dropo (highest graded!), 9A Mitchell (only one graded higher), 12N Schoendienst (HOF, highest graded!), 13A Zernial (only one graded higher), 15A Dobson (highest graded!), and 16N Sauer (only one graded higher). Nine NM-MT 8: #5N Campanella (HOF, only one graded higher), 9N Pafko (only one graded higher), 10A Rizzuto (HOF), 10N Reese (HOF, only one graded higher), 11A Robinson (highest graded!), 19A Porterfield (highest graded!), 19N Spahn (HOF, highest graded!), 24A Rosen (highest graded!), and 25N Thomson (highest graded!). One NM 7: #15N Kiner (HOF). One EX+ 5.5: #14N Snider (HOF). One EX 5: #20 Shantz. One VG 3: #3 Berra (HOF). The balance of the cards range from 65% Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt condition (with a few slightly better) and 35% slightly lesser. Remarkably crisp, high-grade set of this popular and attractive issue, all complete with tabs. Red Man Tobacco cards are far rarer than most 1950s baseball cards. Because of their tabs (which were designed to be cut) and method of issue, they often have condition problems. This is a gorgeous set, rarely offered in complete-set form in such high grade. Many consider Red Man Tobacco to represent one of the best values of all cards from the era. The SMR value for twenty of the twenty-one graded cards (not including the one VG 3) is $10,805. Total 52 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+.
