1887 N172 Old Judge Honest John Gaffney - SGC NM 84 - Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,293

Graded NM 84 by SGC. Highest-graded example by SGC. Incredible ultra high-grade N172 Old Judge featuring Washington Nationals manager "Honest" John Gaffney (leaning to left, right hand on hip, in suit). Few Old Judges have survived in this extraordinary like-new condition. This card looks like it was just pulled from a pack! The contrast on this gem is among the finest we have ever seen on any nineteenth-century card or photo. The card is bright and crisp, perfectly clean both front and back, with four sharp corners, a perfect photo image, and with flawless clarity and contrast. Centered just a hint to the right, with a very slight tilt to the image. Only one in a thousand Old Judges will "pop" like this one. Gaffney was an umpire and manager in Major League baseball. Hall of Famer Connie Mack, who was a rookie catcher for Gaffney's 1887 Washington team, described him as the perfect umpire. It was noted by legendary umpire Bill Klem that Gaffney was the first to be widely nicknamed "King of Umpires." This is a tremendous card, one of the best we have ever seen from the N172 Old Judge series, in virtually perfect condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,293
