1887 N172 Old Judge Capt. John Ward

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,175

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Very attractive 1887 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer John Ward (hands-on-hips pose - "Capt. John Ward, S.S. N.Y's."). Ward is recognized as one of the most important and influential players of the nineteenth century. In addition to being a star pitcher, and later a standout shortstop for the N.Y. Giants during the 1880s, he was also one of Major League baseball's few true scholars. Ward was a college graduate (Penn State), and he later earned a law degree from Columbia. In 1890, Ward served as the leader of the short-lived renegade Players League. Superb photo quality, no creases, a clean back, and strong corners (a hint of corner wear in the upper left). This is a very striking, exceptionally high grade example of one of the key Hall of Famer cards in the N172 Old Judge series. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,175
