1968 Topps Plaks Checklist #2 National League Includes Aaron, Clemente, Mays, Rose
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $823
One of only nine examples graded by PSA (one NM 7, the other eight received Authentic). Stunning sheet-cut example of card #2 Checklist National League from the extraordinarily rare 1968 Topps Plaks test set. The card features color portraits of each of the twelve National League players in the set, including Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Don Drysdale, Willie Mays, and Pete Rose. This is one of rarest sets of all 1960s Topps test issues. This is one of the few Topps sets from the 1960s that make 1968 Topps 3Ds look common! This set was never actually issued to the public and fewer than 100 examples are known to exist. The card has not been assigned a numerical grade due to being hand-cut from a sheet. Decades ago a sheet existed that naturally looked great but had much duplication (even though it was not a large sheet, only two cards comprise the 1968 Topps Plaks checklist card "set") and the owner cut it up to satisfy the demand of collectors for individual cards. This example has light wear on the corners and edges, surface wear across the word "Baseball" at the top, and is otherwise in Excellent condition. This is one of the most interesting, attractive, and high quality of all Topps test issues. Ironically, this contrasts drastically with the quirky plastic Plaks themselves, which are being checklisted by these beautiful cards, and which have a completely different charm to Topps test issue collectors. The checklist cards have been largely overlooked in the marketplace in part due to their rarity, but are a favorite of advanced star collectors who are aware of the set. This is a very attractive example from this rare and substantial Topps test issue. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600+. SOLD FOR $823
