1889 N172 Old Judge Bid McPhee
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,233
Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Downgraded due to two ink stamps of name (presumably of a former owner) on the reverse, otherwise in Very Good condition. Extremely rare and desirable 1889 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer Bid McPhee (catching, looking at ball pose, "McPhee, 2d B.,Cincinnatis") dating from his playing days as a second baseman with the Cincinnati Red Stockings. McPhee is perhaps the single rarest of all the Hall of Famers in the Old Judge set. Very attractive example with 1888 copyright date (The copyright date on the photograph of the card is "1888" but the style of the card design indicates it was issued in 1889.) No major creases (a light surface wrinkle is visible on the reverse), evenly rounded corners, and medium contrast. The reverse has two period ink stamps with the name of a former owner. (It was very common long ago for collectors to write or stamp their name or initials on the back of cards; this "comes with the territory" with many nineteenth-century cards, especially Old Judges). An exceptional example of one of the most highly prized and significant rarities in the N172 Old Judge set. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $2,233
