1953 Topps Original Unissued Card Artwork Richie Ashburn

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $6,463

Original unissued artwork of Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn of the Philadelphia Phillies to be used in the 1953 Topps series. This artwork of Ashburn was created in anticipation of him signing a contract with Topps to be featured in their 1953 series. Unfortunately, legal complications did not allow his inclusion in the 1953 Topps set. Ashburn signed with the rival Bowman Gum Company to be featured in its 1953 Bowman Color series, so this artwork was never used to create a baseball card. Several other players were also intended by Topps to be included in the set, but Ashburn was certainly the most noteworthy of these players. Fortunately, former Standard Catalog and SCD Editor and Hobby Hall of Famer Bob Lemke has created a fantasy card using this artwork showing what Ashburn's 1953 Topps card might have looked like had it been issued. He sent this to us as a gift (thank you, Bob!) but we feel we have to send this card to the winner of this lot. The Bob Lemke-produced "1953 Topps Ashburn" accompanies the lot. (We don't know how Bob makes these cards, but he's REALLY great at it). The Ashburn artwork is a particularly outstanding painting for "a 1953 Topps card that could have been but never was" from the Sy Berger Collection. Artwork measures 3.5 x 5 inches. Standard production-related glue remnants on the front and blank reverse. Excellent condition. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $6,463
