1976 Hostess Unassembled Complete Boxes (200 boxes, 4 complete sets)

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $2,938

From the Sy Berger Collection: Presented is a hoard of 200 complete unassembled 1976 Hostess boxes, representing four complete sets. In 1975 Hostess issued this landmark set of 150 cards on the bottom of boxes of Hostess snack cake products, with one three-card panel appearing on the bottom of each box. This is the second of five annual Hostess issues. The set was sensationally successful, and collectors all over the country were seen stocking up on Hostess products. The average collector gained ten pounds! The cards were only supposed to be available at stores on the bottom of boxes containing cakes (that was the whole point-you were supposed to buy the product to get the cards). Sy Berger and Topps played a major role in the Hostess promotion, and these unassembled boxes were somehow sent to Sy, probably as samples direct from the printer or from Hostess to give him an idea of how the set was looking. Other complete unassembled boxes are known, but their distribution is very poor, with almost the entire population of unassembled Hostess boxes representing just a handful of card numbers. This collection of 200 boxes represents four complete sets of fifty different unassembled boxes! Being unassembled, these boxes were obviously saved by someone at Hostess or by the printer, and with all the extra package-design advertising, are extremely impressive. Each complete box has one three-card panel, for a total of 600 cards. Four perfect examples of each Hall of Famer and star are included: Aaron, Brett, Bench, Yount, Munson, Seaver, B. Robinson, Carew, Palmer, Rose, Schmidt, Ryan, Fisk, McCovey, Yaz, etc. The complete boxes range from Nr/Mt to Mint condition. The cards are all in Mint condition. The recent introduction of grading of handcut panels by PSA is just beginning to have a significant effect. Although there are no guarantees with reference to grading, it would be hard to imagine that these boxes do not include a generous supply of panels with the potential for grading PSA 10. The Standard Catalog book value (in panel format) for these four sets is $1,200. As complete boxes they may be valued at a premium. Total 200 complete unassembled boxes. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $2,938
