Sy Berger Hall of Fame Correspondence Archive Including Two Jackie Robinson Letters (5)

This collection of five letters to Sy Berger is comprised of two written by Jackie Robinson, and one each written by Ford Frick, Warren Giles, and Monte Irvin. 1-2) Two one-page typed letters, dated 2/10/61 and 12/22/61, respectively, one signed in blue ink (grading “10”) by Jackie Robinson, the other not personally signed by Robinson, but signed for him by his secretary (2/10/61). Both letters (8.5 x 7.25 inches), which are extremely brief, are written upon Chock Full o’ Nuts stationery and concern Robinson’s role as a member of Topps’ Honorary Committee. Each letter displays both horizontal and vertical mailing fold lines. Both Ex-Mt. 3) One-page typed letter, dated 9/26/61 and written upon “Baseball” letterhead, signed by Commissioner of Baseball Ford Frick in blue ink (grading “10”). In his brief letter (8.5 x 11 inches), Frick accepts an invitation to an unspecified luncheon given by Topps. The letter displays horizontal fold lines and the pencil notation “File Rookie Election” along the top border. (Based upon that notation, this luncheon may have been related to the annual selection of the Topps All-Star Rookie team, the idea for which was Sy Berger's in 1959.) Ex-Mt. 4) One-page typed letter, dated 9/25/61 and written upon official National League letterhead, signed by National League president Warren Giles in blue ink (grading “9”). In the letter (8.5 x 11 inches), Giles regrets the fact that he cannot attend the same luncheon referenced in Frick’s letter. Like the Frick letter, this letter also displays normal mailing folds and bears the identical pencil notation “File Rookie Election” along the top border. Ex. 5) One-page handwritten letter, dated 10/7/91 and written upon “Monte Irvin Baseball Group Inc.” letterhead, signed by Monte Irvin in blue ink (grading “10”). In his letter (8.5 x 11 inches), Irvin regrets the fact that Sy couldn’t attend the 1951 Giants’ 40th reunion and also asks for a few cases of Topps hockey cards. With normal mailing folds. Ex-Mt.
