1927 New York Giants Team-Signed Ball

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $823

Official National League (Heydler) ball signed in black fountain pen by the following twenty-six members of the 1927 New York Giants: Hornsby, Ott, Terry, Jackson, Bresnahan (coach), Grimes, Roush, Fitzsimmons, Barnes, Cummings, Tyson, DeVommer, Cheeves, McQuillan, Henry, Bentley, Clarkson, Songer, Mueller, Jeanes, Reese, Hamby, Boney, the team doctor, and two others (faded beyond legibility). The signatures vary in strength, mostly ranging from "2" to "6," averaging "3/4." The Bresnahan signature grades only "1" but is clearly legible and a particularly rare signature in any form, especially on a ball. 1927 was Rogers Hornsby's only season with the New York Giants. In addition to leading the club in hitting (.361), the famed "Rajah" was also forced to take over the managerial reigns for thirty-two games when John McGraw fell ill. The club apparently took to Hornsby's leadership during that time, as the team's winning percentage (.688) was much better than that under McGraw (.597). The Giants eventually finished in third place behind the Pirates and Cardinals, with just two games separating the top three clubs. All of the manufacturer's stampings remain bold and legible. The ball is lightly soiled and displays a number of tiny abrasions that affect some of the signatures. In Very Good condition overall. 1920s New York Giants team-signed balls are particularly scarce, making this ball, featuring a total of seven Hall of Fame players, an exceptionally desirable example dating from Hornsby's only year with the club. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $823
